I'm Apayo (Ah-by-you, it's my Yup'ik name). I'm from the Bristol Bay region of Alaska, the heartland of wild salmon runs, clean water, wild animals, and the Yup'ik Eskimos. I take great pride in being from some of the first people to have lived off the Alaskan lands. Although there has been years of mistreatment and cultural trauma that has resulted in a lot of alcohol abuse and violence among our communities, I see the healing of our people taking place and a new age of native people reclaiming our rightful spot among the leaders who make decisions for the lands of Alaska. I hope to be a positive force for our region by sharing a piece of my mind with the world. I am inspired by my home and the many people who have unknowingly or knowingly, ingrained a unique set of cultural beliefs within me that push me to do the right thing. At the moment, the right thing is to warn people of the Pebble Mine Prospect. It is cultural genocide to allow large scale development entities to destroy massive amounts of habitat that bear the future generations that build the foundation of our traditional subsistence lifestyle.
